Getting to the city of Thessaloniki

We are now ready to head to the beautiful city of Thessaloniki!

The city center is 20 km from the airport and getting to downtown usually varies from twenty (20) to twenty-five minutes (25).

Alternatively, you can choose the urban bus line, which, although it is the most low-budget solution, will need more than an hour to take you to the city center due to the distance and to the works currently in progress for the local Tube.

Alternative routes to get to Thessaloniki

Heading to Thessaloniki, there are two routes to choose from:

the first option is the ring road that embraces the city and passes through the forest of Seich Sou, providing convenient and quick access to any point of the city.

No traffic should be met at the Ring Road, in the absence of traffic lights, to delay your transfer.

The second available route cross-cuts the city.

It is the route through which you will be able to see a significant part of Thessaloniki.

Egnatia Street, which is leading right in the heart of the city center, is located just above the ancient Egnatia, which was only recently discovered, with a multitude of archaeological finds after the excavations that took place for the construction of the Thessaloniki Tube.

At the beginning of Egnatia Street, we will meet the University of Macedonia and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), the largest university in the Balkans, hosting about 75,000 students and covering an area about 430,000 m2.

After Ethnikis Amynis Street, on your right hand, you will see the Arch of Galerius or “Kamara”.

This is the meeting point of the locals. It was built in honor of Emperor Galerius when he returned to the city as a winner.

After that, we reach to Aristotelous Square, one of the most central points of Thessaloniki.

An alternative route to pass through the city is to follow the Georgikis Scholis Avenue, Ethikis Antistaseos, Vasilissis Olgas, Vasileos Georgiou, Manoli Andronikou, in order to arrive at the main street of the city center, Ioannis Tsimiskis Street.

Just before entering in Tsimiski Street, the visitor can see the OTE Tower, from which one can have a splendid overview of Thessaloniki, while a little further on, on your right hand, you will meet the Historical Center of the city. You can also check out the Thessaloniki Film Festival and the Film Museum of Thessaloniki which are hosted in Apothiki A in the port. You will find scheduled screenings all year.

The Thessaloniki Film Festival was first launched in 1960 and has been benchmarked as one of Greece’s most important cultural events.

At the same time, it is one of the most important meeting points of the European and World Cinema, as the Thessaloniki Film Festival has hosted great creators of the seventh art.

Some of them are Nagisa Oshima, Nanni Moretti, Krzysztof Kieślowski, Bernardo Bertolucci, Manoel de Oliveira, Ken Loach, Pedro Almodóvar, Jerzy Skolimowski, John Boorman, Kiyoshi Kurosawa.

The contribution of Greek film makers, including Theodoros Angelopoulos, Nikos Koundouros, Stavros Tornes, Nikos Papatakis, Alexis Damianos, Nikos Nikolaidis, Vassilis Georgiadis, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, Pantelis Voulgaris and others has also been valuable.
