Where is Vourvourou?
Vourvourou is a small village of Sithonia, Halkidiki. It is a small settlement of Agios Nikolaos Municipality and well known for its great beaches and turquoise waters.
Vourvourou used to be owned by fishermen of Agios Nikolaos but today is mostly a tourist destination.
The area produces honey, olive oil, tsipouro, wine and of course there are still many fishermen that bring fish every day. The local economy is based on tourism as well. Beautiful beaches such as Livari, Xifara, Karidi and Bara attract many tourists every year.
The natural scenery that combines green pine trees with the crystal waters is one of a kind!
Vourvourou is also famous for numerus boat rentals. Plenty of businesses rent their boats, some of which do not require a special licence.
Bigger boats however, actually need a licence. In case you do not have one, these companies can rent you a boat with its driver.
How far is Vourvourou from Thessaloniki Airport?
Vourvourou is located 103 km away from Macedonia Airport Thessaloniki and you will definitely need more than an hour to get there. The traffic while going to Halkidiki is always worse during weekends so you may consider travelling on weekdays.
Is there an Airport near Vourvourou?
No, there is no Airport near Vourvourou, as there is no Airport in Halkidiki.
The nearest Airport is Thessaloniki Airport Makedonia SKG. The distance between them isn’t long. You can go from Thessaloniki Airport to Vourvourou or to every other destination of Halkidiki within three hours max.
History of Vourvourou
The area of Vourvourou has been mentioned since the 10th century, when it was given to the Xenophontos monastery of Agion Oros, from the Byzantines.
Later, Vourvourou was inhabited by the people of Agios Nikolaos. They sent away the Russian monks who owned the place and became the rulers of the place.
In 1913, the cruelty of the Bulgarians against the people of northern Greece led some of them to leave their homes and search for safer places to live.
People from Serres, Amphipolis, Paliokomi and Lakovikia went to Vourvourou and settled there. However, a cholera epidemic sent them back to their homelands and Vourvourou remained in the hands of the people of Agios Nikolaos.
How can I get to Vourvourou?
As mentioned before, Halkidiki has no Airport. So, the best way to get to Vourvourou is to take a flight to the nearest Airport which is Thessaloniki Airport Makedonia Skg.
Many national and international flights land every day there, as Makedonia Airport is the second biggest in Greece.
From there you can decide which means of transportation suits you best. You can take the public bus and go to the KTEL station. From there you will take the bus that goes to Vourvourou.
This option is the best for those who don’t want to spend a lot of money and don’t mind the trouble.
Another option is to rent a car and drive yourself to Vourvourou. There are signs that will guide your way there and you can always use a GPS service.
I might suggest ordering your rental to be waiting for you at the Airport so that you will not waste valuable time. It will take you about an hour and twenty minutes to get there, if the road has no traffic.
There are also transfer companies that offer such services. The cost isn’t so high and you will not have to worry about a thing. You can book your transfer by email, telephone or through a website.
This depends on the transfer company you will choose. The drivers are experienced and usually speak english. This way your trip will be as comfortable as it gets.
Where can I stay during my vacation?
The previous decades brought Halkidiki great growth. A place with plenty of natural beauty such as Vourvourou took part in this growth. There are many Hotels and apartments for rent that offer quality services to their guests.

Because Vourvourou attracts many visitors every year, you may consider booking your accommodation earlier. Alternatively you can visit Vourvourou at low season and you will get better prices as well.
At low season you will also be able to enjoy nature without many tourists around.
What can I see while I am at Vourvourou?
During your vacation in Vourvourou you can see the settlements of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. It is an environmentally friendly, model settlement, unique in Greece. Respect to the environment is the main goal there.
Just across the village of Vourvourou is a complex of nine islands, the bigger of which is Diaporos. It is a must visit destination during your holidays in Halkidiki. This small island has a natural gulf, named Kryfto.
When the weather is bad this gulf is used as a safe port for boats. Diaporos has amazing sandy beaches and calm waters while most of the island is covered with pine trees.
The waters here sustain high temperatures and are suitable for winter swimmers as well. You can rent a boat or hire someone to get you there.
You can also visit the peak of Mount Itamos. From there you will enjoy the amazing view of Halkidiki, the Aegean sea and Agion Oros. There are many paths you can follow on foot, use a bicycle or even drive a car.
Many little churches are all around Vourvourou and you can visit them as well. The great wall used to keep Sithonia peninsula apart from the rest of Halkidiki. It is however unknown the time it was built. On the island Diaporos, you can see the church of Agios Andreas from the pre Byzantine era.
Where to eat while I am at Vourvourou?
At Vourvourou you can eat at Melia for seafood and vegan dishes or you can go at Paris Restaurant for Greek or Mediterranean tastes.
If pizza and pasta is your thing you can eat at Gousto or Pizza Top and of course at Ovelix where “the size doesn’t matter”.
There are options for breakfast or cafe such as Casa La Creme, Ikaros Bistro and V Cafe.
Where can I go swimming?
The most famous beaches around Vourvourou are Karidi, Livari, Xifara and Fava. But if you are at Vourvourou you must visit the little islands like Diaporos. You can go there with a small boat or even a sea bicycle. You will not regret it!
The beaches there are worth the try and the natural beauty will reward you.
