How to Get from SKG Airport to Thessaloniki

The city centre is located 20 kilometres from Makedonia Airport, and the transfer time usually ranges between twenty (20) and twenty-five (25) minutes by car or minivan.

Alternatively, you can choose the city’s public transport. While this is the most budget-friendly option, it will take over an hour to reach your destination due to the distance and the ongoing construction works for the new metro system in Thessaloniki.

I Want to Go to Thessaloniki – I Have Two Options

When heading to Thessaloniki, we have two route options:

The first option is the ring road, which surrounds the city through the Seich Sou forest. This route ensures a smooth journey, as there are no traffic lights to slow us down.

The second option takes us through the city, allowing you to experience Thessaloniki up close and get a better feel for its vibrant atmosphere.

The Egnatia Road, which we will follow towards the city centre, runs directly above the ancient Via Egnatia. Recent excavations carried out during the construction of Thessaloniki’s metro system have uncovered numerous archaeological findings beneath this historic route.

At the beginning of Egnatia Street, we will come across the University of Macedonia (PA.MAK.) and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), the largest university in the Balkans, with approximately 75,000 students and a campus covering around 430,000 m².

As we pass Ethnikis Amynis Street, on our right, you will see the Galerius Arch, also known as Kamara. This landmark is a popular meeting point for Thessaloniki’s residents and was built in honour of Emperor Galerius after his victorious return to the city.

Next, we will arrive at Aristotelous Square, which is one of the most central points of Thessaloniki.

Alternatively, we can choose the routes of Georgikis Scholis Street, Ethnikis Antistaseos Street, Vasilissis Olgas Avenue, Vasileos Georgiou Street, and Manolis Andronikos Street to reach the main road of Thessaloniki’s city centre, Ioanni Tsimiski Street.

Just before entering Tsimiski Street, we come across the OTE Tower, which offers a magnificent view of Thessaloniki. A little further down, on our right-hand side, we will find the city’s History Centre. As we approach Aristotelous Square, we can check the schedule of the Thessaloniki Film Festival at the designated kiosk.

The Thessaloniki Film Festival was first launched in 1960 and has since been established as one of the most significant cultural events in the country.

At the same time, it is one of the most important meeting points for both European and global cinema. Many great creators of the seventh art made their debut and presented their works at the Thessaloniki Film Festival, including Nagisa Oshima, Nanni Moretti, Krzysztof Kieślowski, Bernardo Bertolucci, Manoel de Oliveira, Ken Loach, Pedro Almodóvar, Jerzy Skolimowski, John Boorman, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, and many others.

Greek filmmakers have also played a crucial role in shaping the festival through their films and the tributes held in their honour.
